In a Nutshell
TOP Testing Suite is build around JMeter – a Java-based testing framework – containing the core logic for defining, managing and handling test plans. TOP Testing Suite can be used for the generation and analysis of network traffic supporting both functional and performance testing of telecom frameworks. The suite is dressed in a convenient and easy-to-use GUI enabling users to build test plans by choosing from a wide range of predefined and preconfigured test elements. The user can graphically compose messages and validation rules to easily establish any kind of test environment. Test plans can comprise test scenarios varying from very simple to most sophisticate in accordance with the level of complexity of the telecom system under test.

Supporting a Wide Range of Telecom Protocols
TOP Testing Suite comes with various plug-ins featuring testing solutions covering a wide range of telecom protocols including Diameter, CAMEL, CORBA, Web Services, Enhanced SSH/Telnet, and JMS. To suit any specific testing environment, other protocols can be added as required. For each protocol the suite comes with a comprehensive list of predefined messages and data types, such as AVPs in Diameter messages. The intuitive GUI makes modification and addition of new messages and data types a straightforward activity, permitting the testing of any message format, either being standard or vendor-specific. All messages are encoded and decoded based on the scheme as described in the applicable protocol.

Historical Background
With the advent of data services and rollout of IMS networks, Diameter-based applications are becoming more and more widespread. This is no wonder, since the Diameter base protocol is particularly suited for this task highly satisfying requirements regarding the performance, availability and flexibility needed by today’s mobile telecom applications and networks. Flexibility, however, is a double-edged sword; besides the obvious advantages, it also has the potential to turn medium and large scale integration efforts into a nightmare due to the existence of differing implementations of the Diameter standard originating from different forums or vendors, for example RFC 4006 versus the 3GPP Call Control Application, or 3GPP Call Control versus Ericsson’s SCAP.
